Brian Morrey

I was born in 1945 at the end of WW11. My father came back from the war 100% disabled which meant my childhood was spent in financial poverty. I will always support the Red Cross because they used to deliver food parcels and clothes to us as a family, even got Christmas presents off them. This upbringing has coloured my whole outlook on life hence the reason I am in the Labour Party. I spent most of the 1960's as a Deep Sea Trawlerman sailing out of Lowestoft until an accident put paid to the career.

In the early 1980's I was the unpaid Secretary to Norwich Trades Council and was the Organiser for the Norwich & Ollerton Support Group during the Miners Strike of 1984/5. It was during the Miners Strike I met my wife and 24 years later we are still together. Most of my working life has been spent doing manual jobs because I was restricted to opportunities as a child.

So with my wife's encouragement in 1993, after being made redundant, I applied to the UEA for a place to finish my Degree in Environmental Science which I had started with the Open University, graduating in 1996.During my Degree I concentrated on Sustainable Development and Waste Management hence I am qualified to talk rubbish and understand how theenvironment works.

I became a City Councillor for Catton Grove in 1993 and have served on many Committees and was their Chair (when we had Committees) for several years. It was while I was the Chair of Environmental Services that Norwich became the only the second UK City to win the European Sustainable Cities Award. My passion is trying to help those less well off and of course the Environment. I am a firm believer that if you wish to change peoples habits and lifstyles you have to have a viable alternative in place that they can switch to.
